Spiked running shoes are for either track or cross country. The track spikes are either specific sprint, middle distance or long distance. What does this mean? Sprint spikes are for up to 400 metres. They have no heel cushioning and if you're running in them you should be flat-out. Middle distance is usually up to 1500m. Here there's some heel cushioning but nothing below the arch. Long distance spikes are for 3000m and above. They have a thin layer of cushioning under the arch and the heel. As you can tell the shoes are very specific in their use but allow you to perform your track event to the very best of your ability. The spikes themselves are often but not always interchangeable. The longest length of spike you're allowed on the track is 6mm and these are usually included with the shoes along with a spike key to get them out and to put new ones in.

The cross country spikes are pretty much a tougher more rugged version of the long distance spikes. The benefit of them is that you have the ability to put whatever length of spike you need into the shoe. More mud = longer spike length. So early season might mean a 9mm spike is put in with 12mm and 15mm an option. Shoes without spikes cannot give this much grip. The main problem is that this theory works well on all grass or parkland courses. They're not good on mixed terrain.
