Stability or motion control shoes are also known as maximum support shoes. Different words, same thing. You need these if you have very flat feet (see neutral shoe section for a quick test) or no arches. Their rigidity is designed to help those with very flexible feet and who over-pronate a lot (over-pronation is the degree to which the foot rolls inwards as it rolls forwards from heel to toe) and their control comes from both the materials used (denser materials that don't compress easily) as well as the shape of the shoe (these shoes are often referred to as being straight lasted or not curved if you look at them side on from heel to toe). They do however give some people the only way to protect their feet from rotational injuries.
