Typically associated with and recommended for a low arched foot. If you stand barefoot (feet shoulder width apart) and get someone else to look at you so that you retain good posture. Then squat (bend those knees but keep the back straight and vertical) and ask your friend to check if those arches are flexing (like a shock absorber) or remaining rigid. At the extreme some peoples arches don't flex at all. High-arched, rigid feet need flexible, well-cushioned running shoes (NEUTRAL SHOES) and those with more flexible arches need structured shoes with an element of support or stability (SUPPORT SHOES)
Additionally for women we have what's known as the pelvic Q angle. This gives a difference to how most women strike the ground whilst running compared to men - there's typically a greater angle. Therefore more women need an element of support in their shoes compared to men.
