Typically associated with and recommended for a high arched foot. If you stand barefoot (feet shoulder width apart) and get someone else to look at you so that you retain good posture. Then squat (bend those knees but keep the back straight and vertical) and ask your friend to check if those arches are flexing (like a shock absorber) or remaining rigid. At the extreme some peoples arches don't flex at all. High-arched, rigid feet need flexible, well-cushioned running shoes (NEUTRAL SHOES) and those with more flexible arches need structured shoes with an element of support or stability (SUPPORT SHOES)
Additionally for women we have what's known as the pelvic Q angle. This gives a difference to how most women strike the ground whilst running compared to men - there's typically a greater angle. Therefore more women need an element of support in their shoes compared to men.
Neutral shoes are often the shoes best suited to an orthotic wearer as they provide a good level of cushioning and a low level of support that doesn't interfere with the corrective orthotic insole.
