Long sleeve tees vary in terms of style (round neck or a small zip being the most common) fit (compression is very snug but fitted is more well known) and fabric thickness (some tees feel like a long-sleeve version of a lightweight summer short-sleeve tee and some are fleece lined making them much warmer).
If you run regularly you will benefit from owning a bit of variety. It's important to feel comfortable whilst you're running. Good kit that is appropriate for the conditions you are running in will certainly help. The light weight tees are perfect for when it's just slightly too cold for short-sleeve. However, they are versatile. You can layer up, so they also work underneath a jacket and underneath a regular tee (this could be cotton as it's what's next to your skin that's important).
The compression tops have a tight feel. As to whether or not they feel warm depends on if they're the thermal version or not. The feel for running in these tops is not for everyone and some people chose to save these pieces for post-run recovery (the compression element increases blood flow around the body) while others chose to use them for higher intensity workouts.
Remember to dress for a run. Think about how warm you will feel 10 minutes into the run. Don't wear too much and don't try to be a hero by wearing too little.
