Apex Sports, Paddington - About us....
Apex Sports Paddington was opened on 15th September 2006 by GB 400m stars Tim Benjamin and Mark Richardson. Grown from our sister shop at Farnham Common, which has been serving the runners of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and the surrounding area for over 15 years, we are London’s largest running specialist sports shop.
Paddington is steeped in running history, on 6th May 1954, Roger Bannister became the first person to run the mile in under 4 minutes. Much of his training was performed on the running track at Paddington rec, a short warm up jog from St Mary’s Hospital where Roger worked as a trainee doctor.
On the morning of 6th May, Roger worked his usual shift, although he took a break from his usual rounds, preferring to save some energy and stay off his feet as much as possible.
He then took a train to Oxford from Paddington Station, which is next to the hospital and the rest, as they say, is history. 3 minutes 59.4 seconds of history.
The shop itself is in a brand new development surrounded by Head Offices of VISA, Kingfisher, M&S, Monsoon and Orange. Sheldon square also is becoming established as a niche sporting area. In addition to Apex Sports, Cannons gym is next door offering one of the largest swimming pools in London, plus we have Metro Golf, an indoor golf facility with "real clubs and real balls"!
Check www.inpaddington.co.uk for details of local events such as live music in the area immediately in front of the shop, great on a summers day.[meet the staff]
