Looking to take the pain out of running, a Swiss engineer has set about creating a shoe that enables the runner to land as soft as if running on sand, and to push off as if running in track shoes.
The result is the the On Running Shoe – a shoe that incorporates a unique rubber ring into the sole design to provide a soft landing, while offering firmness and stability on push off.
Existing running shoes are designed to absorb vertical impact, but the foot is exposed to both horizontal and vertical impact when running. It is the horizontal impact that causes the most damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.
Today’s shoes are also built to stabilize, guide and control the foot in its movement. This means that the runner’s postural muscles become lazy and even degenerate. The idea of the On is to create a support system that actually activates the postural muscles.

The newcomer Swiss running footwear brand On is the overall winner of this year’s ispo BrandNew Awards presented by ThermoºCool™. One of the persons in charge of ON is the well-known Swiss triathlete Olivier Bernhard. The running shoes presented to BrandNew featured a new outsole system with the potential to stir the market. With their “CLOUDTEC” technology, a hollow 3-D element incorporated in the outsole, the running shoe ensures that not only vertical but also horizontal impacts are reduced by up to 30%. In addition, the innovative cushioning elements are responsible for the fact that the postural muscles, which readily degenerate when wearing over-supportive regular running shoes, are strengthened and thus additionally stabilize the joints in a natural way. The result is an unbelievably gentle, almost “rolling” running experience – running lightly as if on clouds – while at the same time providing extra forward momentum for a quicker run.
